Fund raising dinner for Orissa State
Sep 16, 2017 @ 5:30 pm - 9:30 pm
By Peter Lane Rai
IN 2015 I was teaching on family relationships at a Christian youth residential center in Hyderabad and heard the life stories of many of the young people. Vanita (not real name), 22 years old from Orissa State had a particularly sad story, during some communal unrest in 2012 both her parents were murdered in front of her.
It is a huge challenge for a young girl, anywhere in the world to survive, after being suddenly orphaned. Yet she did largely because the Christian community not only provided a family to live with but also an education which involved sending her to Hyderabad for several months.
This is why I am especially interested in the Indian Evangelical Mission fundraising dinner for Orissa State that will be held 5.30pm on Saturday 16th September 2017 at Gateway Baptist Church Function Room 1052 Mt Gravatt Capalaba Road, Mackenzie.
IEM, founded in 1965, is based in Bangalore and currently has mission fields in 37 places in India and in six other countries.
Some funds raised will be for the urgent need to replace the 100 year old Orissa hostel. Friends of IEM, around Australia, are also raising funds for this needy and worthy cause.
IEM has a large work in India with 23 hostels supporting and caring for hundreds of tribal orphans and needy children.
Also there is a “women’s empowerment programme” training women at Sewing Schools with the hope that one day they can have a source of income.
The guest speaker is Rev Dr Raja Singh, the General Secretary of IEM, so come along, enjoy some beautiful curries and hear inspiring stories like Vanitas.
